Basketball BC, under its insurance policy, provides insurance coverage for Basketball BC Members Clubs and their registered participants (athlete, coaches, and volunteers).

The insurance coverage period is the same as Basketball BC's membership season, September 1 - August 31.

For more information, please read the Basketball BC Insurance Program Coverage Summary.

All Member Clubs are required to have Safe Sport policies and may be required to provide the policies to Basketball BC upon request.  Failure to implement and follow Safe Sport policies may affect the Member Club’s insurance coverage.

The Member Club can opt out of the Basketball BC insurance coverage.  Opting out of the coverage will not change the participant dues nor the requirement of the Participant Data File.  If the Member Club opts out of the coverage, the Member Club will be required to sign an agreement to indemnify Basketball BC and its insurance provider.

To opt-out of the Basketball BC Member Club insurance coverage, please download the Insurance Opt-Out & Indemnity Agreement and email the completed agreement to Basketball BC Clubs upon completion of the Member Club Registration.  Please include the Club Name in the subject line.

Emergency Travel Medical Insurance (TMI) is not covered under Basketball BC's Member Club insurance coverage.  Please see the Basketball BC Insurance Program Coverage Summary for information on how to purchase this optional insurance coverage.

The PARTICIPANT DATA FILE identifies the individuals who are covered by Basketball BC‘s insurance policy.
  • The Club is solely responsible for the completeness of the participant data submitted.
  • Basketball BC is not responsible if a claim is denied due to incomplete information
Failure to provide the participant information and to pay the required participant dues may affect the Member Club's status and its participant's insurance claim.

Basketball Activities

The basketball activity must be sanctioned by Basketball BC for the insurance coverage to be valid.  Regular basketball activities of the Member Club are automatically sanctioned by BC.

These regular sanctioned activities include:
  • Basketball practices and games,
  • Related basketball training,
  • Development camps and/or coaching clinics

All non-regular basketball activities need to be sanctioned separately by Basketball BC.  An additional fee may be charged by the insurer depending on the activity.

The Member Club activities requiring additional sanctioning and coverage by Basketball BC include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Tournament hosting - see information below
  • Team fundraisers

To request sanctioning of non-regular activities, please email Basketball BC ClubsPlease include the Club Name in the subject line.

Please allow a minimum of two weeks for the request to be reviewed and processed.  A separate Certificate of Insurance (COI) may be required.

Non-basketball activities will not be covered by Basketball BC's insurance policy.  This includes team building activities.

Tournament Hosting

When hosting a tournament, the insurance coverage only applies to Basketball BC Member Clubs and their participants.  Non-member clubs and their participants do not have any liability and accident insurance under Basketball BC's policy.  The Member Club host is responsible for informing the non-member club and is expected to ensure that the non-member club has their own insurance coverage.

There is a risk of allowing uninsured clubs to participate in a Member Club hosted tournament.  Basketball BC will not accept those risks.

Certificate of Insurance (COI)

Member Clubs may be required to provide proof of insurance to rent a facility.

A Certificate of Insurance (COI) on Basketball BC's policy will be issued upon request through the online Member Club Registration or by emailing Basketball BC ClubsPlease include "COI Request" and name of the Club Name in the subject line.

A COI will not be issued until the online registration process is completed and participant dues have been paid.

Please allow at least a minimum of one week (5 business days) lead time for your COI to be requested and issued.
