His love for the sport persisted through his varsity years at Vancouver Community College, where he contributed to three BC College Championships and achieved recognition as a standout player.
Beyond his playing career, John's remarkable impact lies in his extensive contributions to the growth of basketball at local, provincial, national, and international levels. Notably, he served as the Tournament Director for the BC High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament from 1992 to 2014, overseeing significant developments, including a partnership with the Vancouver Grizzlies and the transition to the Langley Events Centre in 2011.
John's dedication earned him numerous accolades, such as the Basketball BC Special Merit Award in 1996 and honorary membership in the BC High School Basketball Association in 2002. He played a pivotal role in establishing the "virtual" Basketball BC Hall of Fame in 2001, which has since inducted 153 individuals or teams.
His influence extended nationally as a Canada Basketball Hall of Fame selection committee member and internationally as a representative on the Central Board of Directors for FIBA America's. John's commitment also reached humanitarian efforts, organizing basketball donations during his UN Peacekeeping mission in 1994.
In recognition of his exemplary service, John was inducted into the Delta Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Basketball BC Hall of Fame in 2012. His contributions were further acknowledged with the Order of Merit of the Police Force in 2006.
Now retired after a distinguished 45-year career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, John Buis continues to cherish his enduring love for the game of basketball.
