February 13th, 2020Basketball BC mourns the passing of Basketball BC 2005 Hall of Fame inductee Bill Robinson

TORONTO, Ont. (February 11, 2020) – Canada Basketball mourns the loss of Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Bill Robinson, who passed away following a stroke on Saturday.

A native of Chemainus, BC, Robinson began his basketball career as at Chemainus Secondary School before going on to play collegiately for Simon Fraser University and the University of Waterloo.

The 5-foot-10 guard played four seasons at SFU, where he averaged 14.3 points per game and amassed 1,504 career points. In his senior season, he was a NAIA All-American honourable mention.

After transferring to Waterloo, Robinson helped lead the Warriors to a national championship in 1975 and was named a CIAU First Team All-Canadian and tournament all-star.

Internationally, Robinson played for Canada from 1970-1977 and most notably captained his Jack Donahue led team to a fourth-place finish at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, narrowly missing the podium. Robinson proudly represented Canada at two World Championships (1970, 1974) was selected to the all-tournament team in 1974.

Robinson, who had just turned 71 on February 2nd, was inducted into the Simon Fraser University Sports Hall of Fame (1986), the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame (2002), the Basketball BC Hall of Fame (2005) and the North Cowichan/Duncan Sports Wall of Fame (2009).

Robinson is survived by his wife Sandi, son David, his two daughters Ella and Leah and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 5 at the Chemainus Legion Hall from 1-4 p.m.
