May 30th, 2025Basketball BC Mourns the Loss of Dave Seaweed

Basketball BC is overwhelmed with sadness by the unexpected and sudden passing of Dave Seaweed, a cherished member of our basketball community. His impact stretched everywhere, and we know how deeply he was respected and appreciated by so many across the province and beyond. We join countless others in mourning this profound loss.
Dave devoted over 35 years to the Greater Vancouver Basketball Officials Association (GVBOA), including several years as its President. His commitment to officiating left an impression at all levels of the game from grassroots, provincial high school championships (boys and girls), to PACWEST college playoffs, where he served as a respected member of the officials panel.
Dave was not only a skilled official, but a mentor and leader. As an active member of the GVBOA Assessment Team and a provincial observer, he dedicated his time to mentoring young officials and supporting their growth through referee and coach development.
A fixture at the All Native Basketball Tournament, Dave was more than just an official. He was an ambassador, encouraging other referees to “Live The Experience” alongside him. He also proudly represented New Westminster in 1990 when he traveled to Japan to officiate six international games across Yokohama, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Osaka, Moriguchi (New Westminster’s sister city), and Tokyo.
His influence extended beyond the court. The Douglas College Foundation created the “Dave Seaweed Award of Distinction”. An award honouring his legacy and given to an Indigenous student who demonstrates a passion for sport and/or physical activity.
Dave's contributions to the game, his mentorship, and his warmth will be deeply missed by fellow officials, players, coaches, fans, and everyone privileged to have crossed paths with him.
We extend our deepest condolences to Dave’s family, friends, and all who mourn this immeasurable loss. His legacy will live on through the game and the lives he helped shape.
