Hall of Fame Banquet and Awards Night Brings Out Basketball Greats

Langley, B.C. – May 10 – Basketball BC, the governing body for basketball in the province of British Columbia, held the 2014 Hall of Fame & Awards Gala at the Langley Events Centre. The event, which featured over 200 guests, recognized outstanding achievement in this year’s basketball season as well as special recognition awards and BC Hall of Fame inductions.

“Tonight is a celebration of excellence,” said Diana Chan, President of Basketball BC. “For those that have achieved success over the last year and those who have made significant contributions to basketball in BC as coaches, athletes, officials and builders, many of which have showcased their talent on the national and international stage.” She also touched on the behind the scenes component of the sport saying, “As we all know, volunteers are the backbone of the Canadian sport system from coaches to drivers, concession minders, raffle ticket sellers, gym floor sweepers, bottle fillers, last minute equipment replacers and cheerleaders. A simple thank you does not seem enough.”

Among those inducted were Spencer McKay (Athlete), Larry Street (Builder), Bruce Enns (Coach), Mike Thomson (Official) and both the 1954/55 Vancouver Eilers and the 1954/55 Alberni Athletics (Team).

“It is a very special night – a night that is about celebrating our community,” stated emcee, Chris Kennedy. “Tonight we recognize excellence in basketball over the last year at all levels, those who have helped shape and guide the game in BC, and celebrate some of the key builders of our game. It needs to be noted the key role that Basketball BC has played, is playing and must continue to play as not only the instructional leaders in basketball in our province, but also the value leaders as we continue to be focused on producing good players and good citizens as part of committed ethical programs.”

The team of the year award went to the Langara Falcons Mens Team, the 2014 CCAA National Champions. Head Coach Paul Eberhardt was also recognized with an individual award for coaching.

Basketball BC’s Executive Director Lawrie Johns noted, “It was a very special evening. Celebrating six additional members of our Hall of Fame, recognizing our award winners including athletes in ten categories, a special woman in basketball, the team of the year, official of the year, five coaches, and a special merit award winner was a true celebration.  Having twelve Hall of Famers join us in the celebration was special as was the presentation by KidSport.”
