April 7th, 2026Basketball BC Leadership Announcement

Basketball BC wishes to share that Shawn Dheensaw has informed the Board of Directors of his decision to step down from his role as Executive Director effective July 3, 2026.

Statement from Shawn Dheensaw

“After thoughtful reflection, I have decided to step away from my role as Executive Director of Basketball BC, effective July 3, 2026. This organization and the people who make it what it is have been an important part of mine and my family’s life for 20 years, and the privilege of leading it has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my sport career.

Basketball BC is built on the dedication of staff, volunteers, officials, coaches, athletes, partners, and board members who care deeply about the game and one another. I am deeply grateful for the trust, collaboration, and relationships formed through shared challenges and successes. I am proud of the progress we have made together in strengthening governance, advancing safe and inclusive sport, and positioning the organization for long‑term sustainability.

I leave this role with gratitude for the journey and confidence in Basketball BC’s future. I remain fully committed to supporting a thoughtful transition over the coming months, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have served an organization that means so much to me.”

Statement from Stu Graham, President of Basketball BC

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to sincerely thank Shawn for his outstanding leadership, dedication, and service to Basketball BC. Over the past four years, Shawn has guided the organization through a period of significant change and renewal, including taking over the management of the association as we emerged from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His steady leadership helped re-establish organizational stability, strengthen governance, and build a strong foundation for future growth.

In addition to his contributions as Executive Director, Shawn’s long-standing involvement as a board member has left a lasting mark on Basketball BC. His strategic vision was instrumental in the effort to create alignment of basketball across the province and in bringing the BC Basketball Officials Association under the Basketball BC umbrella, helping to unify the basketball community and promote a shared pathway for athletes, coaches, and officials.

Under Shawn’s leadership, the organization has made important strides in governance, policy development, financial stability, and alignment with provincial and national sport system expectations. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to the game and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”

Next Steps

The Board of Directors will be posting the Executive Director position later this week and will begin a formal recruitment process to identify the next leader for Basketball BC. The Board is confident that the organization is well prepared for this transition and looks forward to building on the solid foundation that has been established.

Basketball BC thanks Shawn for his service and looks forward to continuing to support the growth and development of basketball across British Columbia.
