The High Performance Training Program (HPT) is the highest level of Basketball BC's High Performance Program and is part of Canada Basketball's overall Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS).
TAS is a national program that provides identified Canadian athletes with the individualized support that they need in their development to enhance what the team-based system already provides.
The HPT program is for athletes entering Grades 10 -12 in the fall (ages 15 -17 by the end of the year). Athletes are required to try out for the program, but some athletes may receive a direct invitation based on prior identification or evaluation through provincial and national team participation.
High Performance Training Program (HPT) is part of Canada Basketball Targeted Athlete Strategy (TAS). The program is committed to developing high quality athletes through a comprehensive yearly training program. The program curriculum has been developed in concert with Canada Basketball. One of the main objectives of the HPT program is preparing athletes for performing on both the National and International stage.
Current BC athletes that are part of Canada Basketball’s National team program are players that have developed through participation in our HPT program and provincial team program:
Marina Radocaj: Cadette National Team
Marah Dykstra: U18 National Team
Jessica Clarke: U19 National Team
Taya Hanson: U23 National Team and 3X3 Commonwealth Games Team
Tara Wallack: U23 National Team and 3X3 Commonwealth Games Team
Cassandra Brown: Senior National Team
Athletes are required to try out for the program, but some athletes may receive a direct invitation based on prior identification or evaluation through provincial and national team participation.
Program Manager: Shaun McGuinness
Head Coach: Cheryl Jean-Paul
Program Coaches: Madeline Antwi, Aieisha Luyken, Diana Lee, Diane Schuetze
Program Trainer: Chris Spencer
Canada Basketball Mentor Coaches: Mike Mackay and Agnes Borg
This Fall, the Boys HPT program will continue with the once a month training model introduced in 2021.
These weekends, while more intensive, will allow for better synergy with athletes participation in school and club training and competition, while also decreasing travel demands on players from outside the lower mainland. The programs will focus on high level skill and concept development while also introducing Canada Basketball national team program concepts and style of play. Additionally, players will be engaged in off court development through guest speakers/coaches and online team activities.
Co-Head Coaches: James Blake (UVic) and Matt McKay (Douglas)
Athletes selected to the program will be notified by Tuesday after the Sunday selection camp. We will not be sending an email to the athletes who were not selected.
For athletes selected to the program, the registration deadline will be included in the selection notification email. All athletes participating in the HPT program must be registered to attend the program.
The selection notification email will be sent through the Basketball BC registration system using email addresses of athletes and their parents/guardians provided for the Tryout registration. Basketball BC is not responsible for any contact information errors made during registration.
Depending on your email filter, the notification email may go to a “junk” folder - make sure your junk folder is not set to auto-delete. The athlete and parent/guardian are responsible for checking for the email notification.
Fees will not be adjusted for partial participation
A 2022-23 Basketball BC Athlete membership is required for participation in a Basketball BC program or event. The membership fee of $15 will be added to the registration if required.
