National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
The National Coaching Certification Program is a coach training and certification program for more than 60 sports in Canada. The NCCP and Canada Basketball are going through a transition from the Old NCCP to the New NCCP. The new NCCP will be a competency-based approach where coaches are:
- Trained in NCCP outcomes relevant the athletes they are coaching
- Evaluated by demonstrating coaching outcomes to a specific standard
The changes in the new program will include the merging of the old theory courses with the old technical course. Information regarding the Old NCCP is at the bottom of the page.
The New NCCP Courses:
Community Stream Community Sport-Initiation (Spring, 2009) Coaches taking this course work with participants 7-11 years of age. The course is a 7 1/2 -hour course covering philosophy, practice planning, safety, basic fundamentals of basketball and coaching ethics. Cost: $124.14 (non-Basketball BC member) $97.89 (Basketball BC member)
Competition Stream NCCP Basketball Competition-Introduction (Offered Modularly) This course replaces NCCP Level 1 Technical and Theory. Coaches taking this course work with participants 11-15 years of age. This 16-hour course includes information on ethical decision making, modified games, safety, practice planning and skill development. After completing this course the coaches will be considered “Trained”.
The NCCP Competition-Introduction course is comprised of three (3) modules. In an effort to make the Competition-Introduction course more available to coaches, Basketball BC will offer these modules separately throughout the year. To be qualified for certification coaches must complete all three (3) of the modules. Coaches must register and pay for the full Competition-Introduction course but may attend the modules at their convenience. Basketball BC will keep a record of the modules each coach has attended.
The three modules of the Competition-Introduction course are: 1. Planning – a 4 hour module in a classroom. 2. Making Ethical Decisions (MED) – a 3½ hour module in a classroom. 3. Modified Games – an 8 hour module in a gymnasium.

Registration and Pre-Module Assignments: Upon registering for a module the participant will receive Pre-tasks that are to be completed prior to attending the module. Please register at least three (3) days before the session you plan on attending. If there are not a sufficient number of registrants three (3) days prior to the course, it will be cancelled, and the registrants will be notified via email.
Portfolio and Evaluation: Part of the requirement to become certified as a Competition-Introduction Coach is the completion of a portfolio and successful evaluation of the candidate at a practice. After the three modules are completed Basketball BC will forward the coach the portfolio. After the portfolio is completed it is to be returned to Basketball BC to be evaluated. If the portfolio is approved, arrangements will then be made to evaluate the coach at practice. After a successful evaluation the coach will be a “Certified” Competition-Introduction coach for basketball.
Cost: $186.63 (non-Basketball BC member) $160.38 (Basketball BC member)
To become “Certified” coaches will have to complete a portfolio and then be evaluated at a game and practice by a provincial evaluator. The evaluation is an additional charge of approximately $90.
