This past weekend, the Basketball BC Steve Nash Youth Challenge took place at the Langley Events Centre. The event featured 10 boy’s teams and 8 girls' teams squaring off in their respective tournaments. In addition to the standard tournament, Basketball BC welcomed the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society (BCWBS) and BC Special Olympics (SOBC) into the festivities.
BC Wheelchair Basketball Society played 3 exhibition games. 2 of these games were against other wheelchair basketball teams and 1 game was an exciting match up between BCWBS taking on a TCYBA girls team and Trinity Western University Spartan superstar basketball players Kurtis Osborne, Tristan Smith, Sarah Cleveland and Emily Knauff. The BCWBS team beat the TCYBA girls and Spartan's by a landslide, proving just how challenging the sport of wheelchair basketball can be! The inclusion of Wheelchair Basketball into the event made for a unique experience all individuals involved, who gained valuable insight and new perspective on the sport. Thanks go out to Makiko Harada, Carrie Linegar, and Brad Hagkull for doing a great job coordinating on behalf of the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society. Basketball BC would also like to recognize Trinity Western University star ballers for coming out and supporting youth basketball development.
Special Olympics BC played their own 4 game tournament within the Steve Nash Youth Challenge. North Shore, Langley, and Surrey competed for the championship title over the weekend. Surrey claimed Bronze in the round robin, leaving Langley and the North Shore to battle it out in the championship game. North Shore put up a good fight but it was Langley who took home the Gold medal. This was the first of what we hope will be many collaborations with Special Olympics BC. A big thanks goes out to SOBC organizer Shawn Fevens! We would also like to recognize SOBC coaches Kurc from Langley, Zak from the North Shore, and Geoff from Surrey; their encouraging yet competitive attitude was a refreshing reminder that having fun and maintaining good sportsmanship is the most important aspect of any game!
The Steve Nash Youth Challenge is an U13 tournament specifically designed for teams that are enrolled in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program across BC. This year's event featured teams all the way from Vernon to right next door in North Langley. The tournament featured many exciting, highly competitive games which concluded with championship games for both genders on Sunday. In the Boys Blue Division, the NLBA Wildcats claimed Bronze in a heated battle against Delbrook with the final score at 42-32. In the Boys Blue Division championship game South Delta Magic took on the Balloholics. Despite the close match-up, the Balloholics defeated South Delta Magic in an emotional end to an exciting weekend with the final score at 41-23. In Boys Red Division final, NLBA's Selects earned the championship title over TCYBA's Heat with the final score at 42-35 leaving TCYBA to take home Silver. Vernon took home Bronze in the Boys Red Division with a 14 point lead over the Woodland Lakers.
It was busy tournament on the girls side with 8 teams in their division. TCYBA's Mustangs started the tournament off strong, but lost to Seymour Storm in the Championship game with the final score at 32-27. TCYBA Sparks battled it out against the MRYB Cougars for Bronze. An exciting game to say the least, the Cougars scored 2 points in the games final minutes giving them the lead and finally naming them the Girls Division Bronze Medal winners.
The event was deemed a great success as many enjoyed the spectacular facility the games were held at. The crowds were alive and competition was fierce, which attributed to great experience for everyone involved. The Steve Nash Teams voiced their enthusiasm for getting to try out Wheelchair Basketball and meeting players from the Special Olympics. Additionally, a shout out for Jessica Anderson from the TCYBA Spirit Bears for winning the scavenger hunt questionnaire and a autographed Steve Nash Jersey as her prize. Thanks to all players, coaches, parents, and partners who helped put on a sensational tournament and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s Basketball BC Steve Nash Youth Challenge!
